iPad 2012: Death and Resurrection

Day 13: Loss

We’ve all experienced loss at some point in our lives, whether it was the loss of a loved one or a family pet, or maybe you lost something that was deeply important to you that you can’t get back. Did you experience loss in 2012? What was it, and how did it affect you emotionally?

Why, oh why, are there so many negative-like prompts? What about those people who didn’t really experience anything negative in 2012? How can we even answer these?

In any case I’ll try my best. I didn’t experience extreme loss in 2012. I didn’t lose any loved ones, pets, or even anything material that was super valuable.

The only thing I can think of has to do with my extreme love for Apple products. Ever since I bought my MacBook back in 2008, I have gone Mac and have never looked back!

Last year I was asked to be a full-time graduate research assistant to a professor in the College of Information Studies at UMD, to help with this huge NIH R01 grant project. Because it was focused on how older adults use technology for health decision-making, I was given an iPad to use for my work.

Man, did I love that iPad. Not only did I use it for the grant work, but I also used it for checking my email, reading articles for class, and basically surfing the web. I grew very attached to that thing and was happy to include it to my cadre of Apple products.

Well, it turned out that the professor was leaving UMD, and I was no longer on the project. And so, I sadly returned the iPad and all the glorious memories I had made with it. I had suddenly lost something that I had grown attached to very very quickly.

Being a poor graduate student, I couldn’t justify nor afford a new iPad, so I went back to the days of using my MacBook and iPhone for Internet searching and email checking. But the whole time, especially while I was on the academic job market, I was trying to figure out how I was going to negotiate getting an iPad in my possession once again.

Little did I know that I didn’t have to do that thinking! The night Michael proposed to me he asked me to walk over to his car – he claimed he had something for me. And there, in his hands, was a brand new iPad – just for me! He told me it was my early Christmas present. And that my friends, is how December 15 became the best day ever, hands down.

So I have an iPad for my own again. What once was lost was once again found. And I couldn’t be happier.

I love my iPad!

I love my iPad!
