The Happiest Day of My Life!

Day 9: Happy Days

Sometimes, there is just one day out of 365 that is just so amazing, that you’re just blissfully *happy*, even when things don’t go your way. Has there been a day this year that sticks out in your mind, where you’ve just been so happy that you had to shout it from the rooftops? What happened? What made that day better than any other day in 2012?

Answering this prompt is seriously a no-brainer. The happiest day of 2012 (and probably of my life so far, for that matter) is December 15. That was the night that I got engaged to the love of my life, Michael Lynn.

At this point, Michael and I had been dating for over 6.5 years, so we all pretty much knew it was going to happen. No surprises there. Add the fact that we went ring shopping on Jewelers Row in Philadelphia a couple of months ago and you might have guessed that I was expecting a proposal relatively soon. Yet, I don’t know how he managed to pull it off, but Michael was still able to completely surprise me when he proposed to me. It was perfect and I wouldn’t have wanted to have it any other way.

Let me tell you the whole story. Well I had flown out West for an academic job interview. I was at the airport getting ready to fly back to DC and I called him to tell him that I was on my way home. He told me to text him when I landed, and so, when I arrived at Reagan National Airport, I did.

The Metro system was all sorts of messed up that day – the Yellow Line was completely shut down, which would have been my direct ride back to College Park, so I had to navigate a whole different way to get home. I was getting really frustrated and cranky when Mike texted me to see where I was. I told him that the Metro sucked and it was taking me longer to get home. Little did I know that he was actually rejoicing because he was driving down to Maryland from NJ at that point, and was running a little behind schedule.

When I finally got back to College Park, I decided that I was hungry, so I pulled up to McDonald’s drive thru to get some dinner. Mike had called me at that point, asking where I was. When I told him that I was almost home, he said he had to go take his dog out. In actuality he was pulling up to my house in MD, and parking down the street so I wouldn’t see his car. He knocked on my door, my roommate let him in (I don’t even think he coordinated with him, just was going with it) and waited.

I literally got home not even five minutes after. I unloaded my belongings from my car, and used my key to open the door…and there, behind the door, was Michael on one knee, holding out the ring we picked out at Steven Singer Jewelers and a bouquet of white roses, my absolute favorite. He looked at me, held the ring out and said “Mah?”

Well first I screamed, because I was surprised to see him there. Then I walked away from the door and back outside because I was so shocked. Then I started weeping like a little girl. Then, I finally nodded yes and gave him a kiss and accepted the ring.

I called a few friends to tell them about the engagement. Then, social media queen that I am, I made a Life Event on Facebook to announce the good news.

At this point my McDonald’s had gotten nasty and stale, so we decided to go to my number one dining spot in CP – The Silver Diner. I go to this particular location so many times that all the waiting staff know me, haha. We got some food, ate and talked for probably about an hour, and I was on the phone with another friend sharing the news when we walked outside and saw…

…that I had left Mike’s passenger side door wide open!

We ran to the car, and found that nothing had been stolen. It was like an engagement night miracle. We left a car door wide open in PG County, and nothing was stolen! It was like God had known that we couldn’t have a theft ruin this amazing day.

Other than my stupidity in that small snafu, the rest of the evening was quite lovely. Michael and I had fun looking at all of the Facebook likes and comments on our posts, and we even started to do a little wedding planning brainstorming the next morning.

So yes, December 15, 2o12 was the happiest day ever, and for good reason. I’m happy that I am engaged to a wonderful, kind, thoughtful man, and that we are ready to spend the rest of our lives together. I’m excited about starting our future together as husband and wife! I can’t wait! 😀

Engagement!
