Day 1: Coping
We all have ways of coping with the stresses of life, whether it be cuddling with a cat or curling up with a cup of tea and a good book. Describe one thing you did this year to cope with your day to day, to escape from reality. How did this one thing come about?
There are two things that I’ve done this past year to cope with the stresses of life, and they are very closely related. Those two things are singing and ballroom dancing.
Let’s face it, I’ve always been a performer. Nothing makes me happier than to show off my karaoke skills or my jive moves at a party. But in all honesty these two things have helped me the most when I didn’t necessarily have an audience.
This past summer, when I was writing my dissertation prospectus, I spent 8-10 hour days writing, writing, writing. What kept me sane and motivated? Being able to take a few hours off to go to ballroom practice space and just dance and unwind. It didn’t have to be technically perfect. I just needed to feel and move with the music, taking the steps that my amazing teachers have taught me over the past year. Also, being able to see my awesome ballroom friends at practice space was an added incentive and bonus that helped with the stress relief.
Additionally, I love singing. I’ve been singing pretty much as soon as I could carry a tune at 2 years old. Some of the biggest stress releases for me has been able to belt out showtunes driving in my car, or singing along to diva ballads in my bedroom. I’ve found over the years that if I just take a deep breath and just start singing, I will 9 times out of 10 feel better instantly.
