Vicariously Living Out Wonder

DAY SIXTEEN – Wonder. How did you cultivate a sense of wonder in your life this year? What will you do in 2012 to keep your sense of wonder alive/not become complacent in your surroundings?

In terms of wonder, I was terrible this year. The response to this prompt last year was so easy because I traveled out of the country. In comparison, 2011 was a bust.

So I’m copping out this year. The way that I’m living out wonder is vicariously through my friends Henry and Kenisha.

Henry and Kenisha are two awesome, amazing friends I met in ballroom this past semester.

Henry was in the marines and has not been home in Maryland in 8 years. He has lived in Jamaica, Paris, and Japan, among other places.

Kenisha is a military kid and has recently settled down in Ft. Meade. She was born in Guam and has lived in Tokyo, the Philippines, and Korea, to name a few places.

Recently these guys were talking about how they can’t stay in one place for very long, which made me think about how complacent I have been. Sure, going to Singapore and Thailand has jump started a desire to travel, but I wouldn’t want to live in any of these places. Visiting is enough for me. If I had it my way, I probably would be content staying in Maryland or New Jersey.

But not Henry and Kenisha. It will be interesting to see how much longer they stick around in the Maryland area. Which is why I have to live out my wonder vicariously through them. If I can’t make it to all these amazing places, then at least I can hear about their experiences.

A really lame response, I know. Hopefully in 2012 I’ll have a more wonderous experience.
