DAY TWO – Let go. What, or whom, did you let go of this year? Why?
Though this is certainly still a work in progress, I am trying to let go of unhealthy habits this year.
As was relayed in a previous blog post, everything changed when my doctor informed me that my cholesterol was getting too high. From that point on, I started seeing the UMD nutritionist, kept track of my calorie intake, went to the gym, tried cooking healthier meals, and made better choices when eating out.
It’s been six months since I heard that news from my doctor, and though it has not been easy, I think I have been making progress. I’ve lost about 12 lbs. since June, and my HDLs (good cholesterol) went up, which is a really good sign.
I haven’t been to the gym in months, but I’ve found an activity to take its place: ballroom dancing. Not only is it an amazing workout (especially if you are dancing 5-6 days a week before a competition!) but I’ve also made some really great friends. I have no doubts that dancing has been part of the reason why I’ve lost so much weight.
However, other things have gone by the wayside: dancing has taken time away from cooking, which means eating out more. Now that I’m home for winter break, I plan to get back to logging my food intake and cooking healthy meals with my family and friends. My hope is that by the spring semester I’ll be back on track.
I may not be able to completely let go of everything unhealthy (my nutritionist says it’s okay to have a burger every once in a while, as long as I don’t make a habit out of it!) but for 2012 I will certainly try my best!
