Distractions: Good or Evil?

DAY THREE – Ambitions. What are your ambitions? What do you do each day that doesn’t contribute to/detracts from your ambitions? Can you eliminate it?

My ambition is to become a successful teacher and scholar at a prestigious research university.

What detracts from this ambition? These are probably the biggest five:

  • Getting burnt out. Going straight from my bachelors to my masters and now onto my Ph.D. takes a lot out of you! Though I certainly wouldn’t want it any other way, I fear that I will get burnt out before I even start my career.
  • Social Media. Instead of going through my Facebook news feed, or popping onto Tweetdeck to see what everyone’s up to, I probably could be writing, researching, lesson planning, or grading.
  • Ballroom dancing. This certainly takes up a lot of time that could be spent doing things related to my ambition. On average I put about 10-15 hours a week into dancing this past semester.
  • Socializing. Whether it’s grabbing dinner with some friends or going to happy hour with grad school colleagues, this takes up time that could be spent doing things that would be more productive.
  • Spending time with the boyfriend. Now this semester this didn’t happen as much as I would have liked, but as you know being in a long distance relationship takes a lot of work!

Would I eliminate these things? Except for getting burnt out – hell no! Life is all about achieving balance, which I have talked about in length before in previous posts. Even though these things take time off from working to achieve my ambition, I wouldn’t want to have it any other way. I’ve always been guilty of being a workaholic, so finding time to do fun things is really important to me.
