December 25 – Photo – a present to yourself. Sift through all the photos of you from the past year. Choose one that best captures you; either who you are, or who you strive to be. Find the shot of you that is worth a thousand words. Share the image, who shot it, where, and what it best reveals about you.
So this picture was taken on May 21, 2010 – the day I got my M.A. degree.
This was taken by my sister, Maria, on the rooftop of my friend Ryan’s apartment in downtown DC. Ryan also got his M.A. degree that day, and so to celebrate surviving UMD’s rigorous program and our friendship I performed a parody version of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” with new words to fit our accomplishments. The beginning went a little something like this:
We really got real fah,
We are the master’s class!
It is was epically awesome, if I do say so myself. By the end of it I had the entire party singing along.
The reason why I chose this photo is because it reveals a number of things about me. First off, it demonstrates that I am not shy and actually love being in the limelight – I love performing for others, and volunteer to do it at any chance I get. Secondly, it was taken at a real important moment in my life – I got my M.A. degree, and though I was continuing on with my doctorate it still was a big deal. It symbolizes the hard work I put in those past two years and shows the hard work that is to come. And lastly, it shows how much I love my friends. I would write songs for everyone who has touched my life if I could (hmm…maybe I should!) if it means that it makes them happy.
…and as you can see, Ryan really liked it!
