Some Things That Make Me “Beautifully Different”

December 8 – Beautifully Different. Think about what makes you different and what you do that lights people up. Reflect on all the things that make you different – you’ll find they’re what make you beautiful.

What makes me different? Here are some things that I have come up with:

  • I am the only one in my immediate and extended family pursuing an advanced degree (both my M.A. and now Ph.D.)
  • I have been singing for as long as I could remember. Many people ask why I don’t audition for American Idol (I tell them it’s because I’m nerdy and go to graduate school). It’s really because I don’t think I can handle being a starving artist.
  • I won two awards this year in a span of a couple of weeks. These awards in total got me $3,000. I don’t know where it all went but I’m still poor.
  • I don’t know why, but I have become a very sexual person. Many conversations with me turn into something that has to do with sex. Do I need to get my mind out of the gutter? Probably. But I find sex fascinating and quite fun.
  • I am a published academic and I am only a first year Ph.D. student. Apparently that’s a big deal, but I don’t really think so – I’ve been submitting manuscripts to journals since my M.A. program.
  • My middle name is Lyn, and my boyfriend’s last name is Lynn, so when we get married I will be Rowena Lyn Lynn (though not really because I will make my maiden name my middle name, and also, why would I want to sound like a Chinese Panda?)
  • Other than death and failure, I have another weird fear. Whenever I drive over a bridge, I always go in the middle lane, because I have this intense deep fear that I would somehow fall over the edge and die in the water. Morbid, I know, but true.
  • I was the spelling bee champ in Camden County, NJ when I was in 8th grade (I spelled “heredity” correctly). Then I came in 2nd runner up for the state championships because I spelled “compulsory” wrong.
  • I have a weird obsession with monkeys. It actually started because I was in the Sexy Animals Club when I was 11, and I was dubbed the sexy monkey. It wasn’t anything really, just a bunch of us in an AIM chat room talking about how sexy we were.
  • I have been performing for 12 years and have been in 20 musicals and 3 straight plays (I like musicals more). I was in my first regional, paid theatre performance when I was 18 (It was Miss Saigon, and yes, I played a prostitute).
  • I have a very extreme peanut allergy. My worst night EVER in MD was when I accidentally ate peanuts and puked all night. My worst day EVER in NJ was when I was rushed to the hospital because I couldn’t breathe. I finally got an epipen but I never carry it with me…whoops.
  • Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” is my ultimate karaoke song and I will always open with it when I go out.
  • Even though I’m 100% Filipino, and my parents were born in the Philippines, I do not understand ONE word of Tagalog. Thanks mom and dad.
  • When I was younger I had an imaginary family: Sandy, Bobby, Michael, and Julie. I would play my “Wee Sing America” tape and pretend that I was conducting an imaginary choir, using a pencil as my baton.
  • I loved making home movies with my sister and friends that took the entire day to shoot but ended up only being a total of 30 minutes. Some favorites include “Another Cinderella,” “The Dare,” “Missing Mrs. Roe,” and the one where we sang to No Scrubs and I threw watermelons at Carl Bierbach…I forget the name of that classic.
  • I only took one real PR class in my undergrad but it is now my field of study. (Thank you Farbman!)
  • I still remember choreographed dances that my cousins taught me in the Philippines when I was 8 years old. (Ask me to do one some time – they’re fun to watch! Some classics include “The Sign” by Ace of Base and “Always” by Erasure) I also remember dances from musicals, such as the Buck N’ Wing dance from Showboat.

I must admit that I took some of these from my “25 Random Facts About Me” note on Facebook. It’s hard to think about what makes you different, but I guess looking back on these, I can claim to be a little unique. 🙂
